Bawa Hope is a social enterprise based in Nairobi, Kenya that specializes in the creation of sustainable jewelry and accessories. Bawa Hope works with waste materials, such as metal scraps, cow horns and bones, upcycling them into contemporary pieces. Bawa Hope's pieces are handmade by women and men from low-income areas of Nairobi and rural Kenya, including refugees.
Refugee Artisan Group
Congolese, South Sudanese, and Burundian refugee artisan groups work with Bawa Hope. Currently, the artisan groups have a total of 176 women that are based in Kenya's Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Settlement. These artisans specialize in beadwork, typically done on simple looms made of wood blocks and nails. Oftentimes their beadwork work is combined with brass-casting done by local Kenyan artisans.
I’ve seen that (beading) has supported me and my family. I can change their diet, I am able to buy soap for washing their clothes, I am also able to buy books and school materials for my children.
